Another month passed. True to his word, Stone didn’t press Ian about the Gabriel situation. Last he’d heard, his son was off on another trip with his friends, this time visiting Greece to examine some magical ruins and check out the nightlife. He didn’t know whether Ian and Gabriel had reconnected before that.

He tried to return to some semblance of a normal life, and felt he was doing a decent job at it. His monthly seminars at the University were as popular as ever, and he took it as a challenge to try topping himself with an even more intriguing topic for each new session. He’d even had a gig with The Cardinal Sin, playing a private party for a wealthy alum. For the first time in a while his life had settled down, and he found he enjoyed it. Aside from occasional trips up to San Francisco to visit Verity, to London to share pints with Eddie and Ward, or out to the Santa Cruz mountains to have dinner with Jason’s family, he spent most of his evenings at home with Raider, catching up on reading and research of both the mundane and magical variety.

He decided to let it go to voicemail. If it was someone else, they could leave a message, and if it was Aldwyn he could pound sand for a while. He tossed the phone on the passenger seat and pulled into the garage.

The little tone indicating a voicemail message sounded as he shut off the ignition.

Okay, probably not Aldwyn. He’d never known the old dragon to leave messages. Curious, he tapped the speaker button and hit Play.

“Dr. Stone? It’s Madison McClain.” The voice was a little breathless, like she was nervous. “I’m really sorry I haven’t gotten back to you for a while, but I’m really grateful for everything you’ve done for me. If you have time, could you call me back when you get a chance? Thanks!” She rattled off a number, then hung up.

Stone stared at the little screen. He had wondered a couple times why Madison hadn’t made contact, but he figured it was because she wanted to get on with her life and put all the reminders of the Evil behind her—including the people who helped her get rid of it. That was her choice, and it was fine with him. He had enough to do with his other projects.

He went inside and fed the
